BUCKLE

Unique ID: SUSS-4BF2F2

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A cast copper-alloy ‘cooking pot’ shaped loop chape with single internal spike. This chape would once have formed part of a shoe buckle dating from the Jacobean period, circa 1660 – 1720. The straight edge of the chape would have formed the strap bar of the buckle. It has a notch cut into it, which would once have housed the pin. The pin is now missing. The metal is dark greyish-green in colour and slightly pitted. These buckle chapes date from circa 1660 - 1720. Similar types of buckles can be seen in Whitehead (2003), p63.
