A roman ceramic samian ware rim sherd, probably Central Gaulish Lezoux fabric, dating to c. AD 120-200. A hard, fine grained orange-brown fabric with an darker orange-brown slip, containing extremely fine grained sparse micaeous flecks and white inclusions, as well as rare quartz and potential iron stones. The sherd is too small to allow for an estimation of form, but probably comes from a beaker or bowl.

Weight: 0.44g.

Samian Ware was produced in Gaul from the mid 1st to the mid 3rd century. The fabric and colour of this example suggests it may be a Central Gaulish ware, probably Standard Lezoux fabric, exported to Britain between c. AD 120 and the later second century (Tyers 1999: 113).
