Lead alloy possible brooch. Cast circular plate with a pelleted lug flanked by smaller lugs protruding. The plate bears at least two outer orders of fine pelleted decoration with a central setting of diameter c.10mm with five short [2.5mm] triangular flaps which formerly retained a separate central stone [lost]. On the back, which is plain, a rib reinforces the back of the lug, which might imply its former continuation: though at first taken as the separate head of a pin, the object lacks a seat or rebate for a separate shank. There is, however, a laterally drilled hole of diameter 2mm passing through the lug, so fastening gear may have been sited here, probably with the plate depending from it. If disqualified as a pin head, the object closely resembles cheap pewter gewgaws imitating contemporary jewellery of more precious materials. A range of these was recorded from a low status industrial urban site at Eastgate, Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire (Spencer, B. 1992, 'Objects of Lead alloy', in Evans, D.H. and Tomlinson, D.G., Excavations at 33-35 Eastgate, Beverley 1983-1986, Sheffield Excavation Reports 3, John R. Collis, Sheffield, pages 143-147, fig. 77, nos 177-180). Suggested date: Medieval, 1150-1250.
Height: 28.8mm, Width: 20.7mm, Thickness (at socket): 4.5mm, Weight: 5.01gms
Notes:
This object has been the topic of further discussion between medieval specialists at the PAS. Rob Webley reports on their thinking to date: '...Have been discussing this one with Helen [Geake] and we don't think it's a brooch. I wanted to float the suggestion of it being a pendant, based on an example from Coppergate (Bayley 1992, 780, fig. 340). I am not certain about this, but thought I would get the ball rolling'. Rob and Helen ] would welcome any further contributions to this discussion.
