Part of a lead alloy four disc cloth seal dating from AD 1550 - 1700. Only one inner disc of the seal survives. It is stamped on one face with a square topped shield charged with three fleur de lis. The reverse is blank. A projecting rectangular tab indicates where the two discs of the other side of the seal would have been attached, and damage to the opposing edge suggest where the final fourth disc would have been positioned. The seal is 18.6mm long, 12.5mm wide and 1.8mm thick. 1.48g.
Cloth seals were in use between the 14th and 18th centuries, but the first four disc seals were probably used at the end of the 16th century and were widely used in the 17th century (Egan, 1992, Finds Research Group datasheet 3, page 2-3). The use of lis heraldry suggests a connection with France, probably imported cloth. Compare WAW-5DF3D2 and NMS-DBA9A6.
