An incomplete lead alloy spindle whorl of medieval date. The object would have been circular in plan when complete with a central circular perforation. One side of the object is missing and it has been stretched out. An even patina suggests that this damage took place during antiquity. Each face of the object is decorated with a series of ring-and-dot decoration consisting of a raised pellet with a moulded circular ring.
Dimensions: 35mm in length, 9mm in width, 8mm thick, 17.95g.
Spindle whorls have reportedly been found in contexts dated from the Roman through to the Post-Medieval period although the majority are typically dated broadly to the medieval period c.1100-1500.
