Silver pin head. A collared triple loop of drawn wire of diameter 1.5mm with a small spherical terminal with a hole of diameter 1.3mm to receive a separate shank [lost]. The loops form two addorsed heart-shaped figures. A maker's mark appears alongside hallmarks stamped at the top of the loops; from left to right these are: G.H.; a lion walking left in a rectangular panel, three or four tiny figures in a shield-shaped panel, and the italic letter [possibly] E. If the figures in the middle part of the hallmark are three castles this would indicate the Newcastle assay office, or if other tripled motifs with an additional smaller figure, possibly Chester, though the maker's initials G.H. are not listed for either town (in Wilkinson, W.R.T. 1975, A History of Hallmarks, Queen Anne Press, London ). The object may be dated to either 1780 (Chester) or possibly 1795 (Newcastle), though this reporter would welcome better informed comment on his readings. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1780-1795.
