Late Iron Age to early Roman (c.AD 0 to c. 100) Nauheim derivative brooch: The copper alloy brooch has an oval sectioned bow, which is undecorated, and tapers to a blunt point. The upper terminal quickly tapers, becomes circular in section and coils twice. The pin is missing. In profile the bow is almost straight in profile. At the lower portion of the bow, the incomplete catchplate develops on the reverse of the bow.
The surface of the brooch has a matte dark green patina.
The brooch measures 59.05mm in length and 5.74mm wide at the spring. It weighs 4.92g.
Nauheim derivative brooches are found on the continent and in Britain where, they are common (Bayley and Butcher, 2004, 147). They date to the 1stcentury AD (ibid, 147). Mackreth classifies this type of brooch as Part 1. The Stead, Birdlip, Nauheim, Type 3b. See Plate 3, No. 3724 for a similar example.
