An incomplete Roman cast copper alloy disc brooch, dating to the period AD 80-200. This was originally circular in form but appears to have been trimmed, thus what was probably a brooch with a margin now consists of a slightly oval shape, without margin, but with a central roundel with raised surround and a star pattern surrounding it, enclosing small triangular cells. These cells still contain the remnants of a red colour. There is also some indication of a dark blue or black colour in the damaged cells beond the star shape, in the area which would have been enclosed by the now missing outer margin.
The reverse is flat, with no markings but with the stubs of a simple D shape hinge plate for the brooch pin and a sub triangular catch plate. The plate is 1.60mm thick.
See Hattatt 2012 p344 no1035. Also Mackreth chapter 7, p108, plate 105 no. 11638.
It is 21.80mm in length and 17.60mm in width and weighs 2.09g.
