An incomplete lead alloy Palm Guard of Post-Medieval to Modern date (AD 1600-1900). The object is a palm guard for leatherworking and is sub-ovate in plan and slightly concave with two circular depressions on the convex face. The object is missing a section of two edges, proximal and distal edges, possibly due to post depositional processes.
The metal is a creamy grey in colour with a pitted and corroded patina
Length: 81.85mm, Width: 47.12mm, Thickness: 6.76mm, Weight: 121.7g
Leather workers' palm guards are discussed in an article in Gordon Bailey's 'Detector Finds 2', 1993, pages 64-5. Dating of these artefacts is very difficult; the earliest examples seem to date from the 17th century, although they may have been in use right through to the 20th century (Bailey, 1993, page 64).
