Lead alloy toy. Hollow-cast toy soldier. A naturalistically modelled figurine at a scale of 1:32 or 54mm, representing a marching bugler or bandsman from a regiment of the British Army. If the former, a light infantry Regiment may be intended; if the latter, possibly a Guards regiment. The scale and style suggest manufacture by William Britains. The figure wears a tunic with projecting wings at its shoulders, a waist belt and cross-belt, holds an instrument with cords attached to kit [mostly lost] in his right hand and wears a sword at his left side. The trousers are tucked into calf-length boots. The tunic retains traces of red paint, and the lower body and feet traces of blue paint. The head is lost. An oval base, partly lost; the fixed arms; and the trousers tucked into the boots, all show this to be an 'Ancient Britain', of pre-First World War manufacture - the company turned its efforts to making shrapnel ball over the period 1915-1918, and the figures made thereafter differed in these particulars. Suggested date: Post-Medieval to Modern, 1893-1914.
