HARNESS PENDANT

Unique ID: LVPL-DA4CA7

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A copper alloy lozenge shaped harness pendant, with transverse suspension loop. The front has an off-white enamel inlay of a standing elephant, in profile and facing left, shaped to fit the space it occupies, with a long flared trunk that follows the angle of the lozenge, raised over its head. The elephant has a small pointed tusk behind the trunk and a raised tail. The shape of the ear is suggested by a paler line, all four legs are visible (although they do not depict a realistic stance). There is a small depression that marks the eye (that may have been distinguished with a different coloured enamel).

The reverse is undecorated. It is reddish in colour, with small patches of green corrosion, and some remnants of gilding on the front.

Dimensions: 44mm long (inc loop), 36mm (excluding loop), 29mm wide, weight 12.90g.

Notes:

The elephant is sometimes used in heraldry and features in many coats of arms. It conveys dignity and power.
