Cast copper alloy dagger guard with two quillons on either side of a central block, dating from the 16th to the 17th century. Both quillons survive and are hexagonal in section with expanding terminals which end in flat faces which are both decorated with incised plain crosses. The central block is rectangular in profile and oval in plan with a rectangular aperture, 12 mm long by 5 mm wide, for the now missing iron tang to pass through. The junctions of the central block with the quillons are flush with the lower face but recessed from the upper face. The flat face is undecorated but on the upper face there are pairs of transverse grooves in the quillon arms, on either side of the block, and there are also three incised, parallel lines on one side of the aperture. On both inner edges of the aperture, on this face, are pairs of small pits which may have helped to secure the tang to the guard. Dagger guards of this form have been recorded on the database, where they are generally dated from the 16th to the 17th century, as in an example from Surrey, SUR 670303, and another from Norfolk, NMS-CB5DD4, where the recorder references: R. Holmes (ed) Weapon: a visual history of arms amd armour (London, 2006), pp.130-1, DW-C 125, small shell guard and ring-guards.
