A bifacially flaked flint handaxe of cleaver form dating to the Lower Palaeolithic c.500,000-250,000 BC.
Description: The handaxe has a rounded butt, wider middle and a blunt 'blade' end. It has been bifacially worked, with flaking covering both sides, this has been uneven however leaving one side much thicker than the other leavining plano-convex in cross-section. The edges are defined by invasive, scaled, low angled retouch. One side from the wide middle to the butt has been knapped straight with short scaled abrupt retouch retouch in a crushing manner to blunt edge. Some of the flaking appears to be quite haphazard leaving hinge fractures above one edge. The blade edge is wide and clearly defined giving the axe a 'cleaver' form. The flint is unpatinated and a light-mid brown 'toffee' colour som esmall patches of cortex remains and some iron staining is present.
