A base sherd of a wheel-thrown ceramic vessel, possibly a Black Burnished Ware (Type BB2) jar of Roman date, circa AD 120 - 250. The fabric is grey in colour with a hard and gritty texture and black burnished outer surface. Abundant rounded quartz temper is present within the fabric.

The fragment is 58.4mm long, 35.5mm wide, 14.3mm thick and weighs 26g.

BB2 wares were produced at sites around the Thames estuary (Kent and Essex) and distributed in south-east England and in northern Britain during the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD.
