Description: An incomplete silver post-medieval dress fastener, probably a cap (or hat) hook, dating to the period AD 1500-1600. This plate resembles a flower, with incisions resembling the folds of the petals and the centre bud of the flower. From the back of this flower plate, where there is no discernible decoration, the hook is attached. It has been flattened on the reverse of the plate and extends between the lower rounded knops. It is circular in cross-section and curls back towards the reverse of the plate in a recurving S-shape, terminating in a sharp hook.

Dimensions: The cap hook measures 22.66mm in length, 12.49mm wide and weighs 3.80g.

Discussion and Date: Artefacts of this type are discussed by Gaimster et al (2002: 169-173). Similar objects reported under the Treasure Act and recorded with the Portable Antiquities Scheme include 2004 T191 (YORYM-589235) and 2007 T280 (SF-2B7792).

Notes:

This object contains more than 10% precious metal and is over 300 years old. Consequently, in terms of age and precious metal content, the object qualifies as potential Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
