An incomplete dolphin brooch dating to the Roman period (AD 43 - AD 65).
The head comprises tubular wings which act as a hinge mechanism for the pin. Each wing is decorated on the front with five, evenly spaced raised vertical lines. Nearly all of the pin is missing, except a few millimetres of the base which terminates in a worn break.
A semi-circular sectioned bow extends centrally from the front of the wings curving steeply to form an arch and tapering steadily in width and thickness towards the foot. The bow is decorated with a raised ridge down its centre. There is also a raised ridge either side of the central line, which curve with the shape of the bow. The bow terminates with three horizontal raised lines, above a flat, oval shaped foot. The remains of a catchplate are attached to the reverse of the bow.
The metal is worn and light green in the colour. The brooch is 57.4 mm long, 28.7 mm wide and 9.6 mm thick. It weighs 20.4 g.
Similar examples of dolphin brooches are depicted in Hattatt (2007, p. 298 - 299, fig. 157 - 158).
