A cast lead, or lead alloy, spindle whorl of Roman to Post Medieval date (AD 1 - 1650). In plan the spindle whorl is sub-circular. There is a sub-circular perforation which is 8.57mm diameter which is located off-centre. One face is convex, the other is flat and both are not visibly decorated. The surfaces of the spindle whorl are a light cream to grey in colour.
Spindle whorls are used for a long period of time and decorated examples are thought to date to the medieval to post-medieval periods. However, this undecorated example is very difficult to date precisely without other evidence (such as pottery).
The spindle whorl measures 23.11mm diameter, is 8.50mm thick and weighs 18.55grams.
