RETOUCHED FLAKE

Unique ID: SOM-8DEE48

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Distal end of a retouched flint flake or blade or probably Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date. The piece has snapped off a larger, but thin, flake or blade with the proximal end lost. The remaining scars on the dorsal face, and the percussion ripples on the ventral face suggets the piece was removed from a core worked in at least two directions at right angles to each other. The entire original edge has been retouched with short, parallel, semi-abrupt retouch becoming longer towards the ends of the remaining edge. It was possibly originaly part of a scraper but too little remains to be sure. The piece is 25.8mm by 13.5mm by 5.3mm and weighs 2.11g.

Notes:

This group was discovered in a field that contained one Palaeolithic handaxe (SOM-8D4799) and Mesolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age material. Tools including scrapers (e.g. SOM-F31D27 and SOM-8A747B ) and microliths (SOM-F4905D), blades (SOM-85B209), flakes and cores (e.g. SOM-F45741, SOM-207114) that can be identified to one period or other have been recorded separately but much of the debitage has been grouped across periods.

There was also a lot of unworked flint and chert from liming in the field.
