A complete Roman silver denarius of Domitian (AD 81-96), dating to AD 92 (Reece period 4). IMP XXI COS XVI CENS P P P reverse type depicting Minerva left holding vertical spear in right hand, left hand on side. Mint of Rome. RIC II, Domitian 169 (second edition RIC II no. 733).

Measurements: 18.59mm in diameter, 2.11mm thick and 2.89g in weight.

Discussion: This find of two Roman silver coins (this coin and KENT-9C0DD5) of the same (close) date from the same field (c. 78m apart) in all probability relates to the same loss or depositional event. They are an isolated find in an area that has, to our knowledge, produced no other Roman coins or objects. Whether this is a dispersed hoard, votive deposit or purse loss it is not possible to be sure.

Notes:

This coin was found in close proximity to another similalry dated and preservered Denarius of Domitian (KENT-9C0DD5), with no other Roman finds in the vicinity they may therefore relate to a single depositional event and thus consitute possible treasure under the Treasure Act 1996.
