Incomplete Cast copper alloy Late Iron Age - Roman mount in the form of a dolphin, possibly a vessel mount 100BC-AD.200. The mount comprises a triangular plate surmounted by a three dimensional 'Dolphin' head. The triangular plate has a convex outer surface and has a double collar at the broad end. The point of the triangle is pointed downwards. On the rear of the plate there is a short circular stud rivet to allow its attachment to the vessel. The zoomorphic head is attached via an integrally cast plate set at a right angle to the triangle. Where the plates meet the rear of the piece has a cylindrical hollow as though the piece were designed to fit over the rim of a vessel. The head itself arches outwards and faces up. The creature's body/head widens before forming a crude snout. The design is reminiscent of later Roman belt buckles such as those in Hawkes and Dunning 1961. Other vessel mounts such as DUR-8474E1, SUSS-696EA5, LIN-65D145 and SF-9207E5 are recorded on the PAS database.
