BUCKLE

Unique ID: WAW-CC8961

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

The object is an oval framed single looped buckle frame which has a buckle plate attached. Both are made from copper alloy. Egan and Pritchard illustrate a similar example, No. 304, the recorded example does not have a triangular sectioned loop though. These buckles date from the mid 12th century to 14th century.

The buckle is a sub-oval shape in plan. The strap bar is narrowed and off-set. The width of the loop expands slightly at the apex. In section the loop is a sub-oval shape. There is no notch for the pin on the loop. The surface of the frame has traces of a light green patina. The pin is missing.

The buckle plate is a copper alloy sub rectangular sheet which has been folded over the strap bar. The sides of the fold, and a central slot have been removed, leaving two folded arms. As decoration the upper plate has two linear grooves running the width of the plate. The terminal of the upper plate is broken, which makes two rivet holes incomplete. The lower plate is more slender than the upper one, but is complete. It has a rivet hole in each corner of the terminal opposite the fold. There is the remains of a copper alloy rivet. The plates are bent at 45°.

The buckle weighs 2.74g and measures 29.9mm long and 14.2mm wide.
