A fragment from the leg of a copper alloy vessel, probably a cooking pot or cauldron of Medieval or Post-Medieval date, about AD 1200 - 1600. Only the flat foot and lower leg survives. The leg trapezoid in cross-section and curves forwards to form the plain foot. The top edge is an old break. The surviving piece is 28mm long, 19mm wide and 6.3mm thick at the top. 28.6g. It has dark grey patina, dark green where damaged.
Medieval pot legs of this type are illustrated in Egan, G. 1998. The Medieval Household. Daily Living c.1150-c.1450, page.164, figure. 132. Egan comments that commonly used cooking vessels in the Medieval period include skillets, ewers, and cauldrons. Compare also Bailey, G. 1997, Detector Finds 3, page 36. See also Butler et Al (2009) leg type (a) which is similar to this example.
