A copper alloy strap slide (strap fitting) which is medieval in date, about AD 1200 - 1400. It is a stirrup shaped loop with a collared knop at the rounded end. There is an integral external rivet projecting from the bar. The frame is trapezoidal in cross-section and file marks are visible. The frame is 26.3mm long, 16.3mm wide and 3.4mm thick. 2.32g.
It is believed that these loops were used to hold down the loose end of a belt. This one is in good condition and has a dark grey patina. Similar examples, though not one with a knop, can be seen in "Dress Accessories" by Egan and Pritchard (1991). They are usually dated to the thirteenth and fourteenth century. Compare SWYOR-B8393A and YORYM-865C62.
