BUCKLE

Unique ID: PUBLIC-0D3EFF

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete cast Copper alloy double-looped buckle frame of Post Medieval date (c.1550-1650 AD). One loop remains with vestiges of the other consisting of ragged breaks. The frame is convex at the front and flat at the rear. The bar is slightly narrowed, sub-triangular in cross-section (flat at the rear) and extends beyond the frame at each side to form small knops. At the outside edge of the frame there is a moulded rosette motif. There is no evidence for a pin rest. The frame has traces of a black substance, probably lacquer. It is in good condition. The remainder of the buckle frame is 27.68 mm in length, 23.54 mm wide, 2.47 mm thick and weighs 3.9 grams. A similar buckle frame has been published by Ross Whitehead (Whitehead 1996: 66, ref: 407) which is dated c.1550- 1650 AD.
