An incomplete Roman copper-alloy nummus of the House of Constantine, perhaps dating to AD 340 (Reece period 17). Victory left on prow holding shield and sceptre reverse type. Mint of Trier. Mintmark: -//TRPCrescent

Obverse: [ ]TAN-TINOP[ ]; Helmeted bust left.

Reverse: Victory left on prow holding shield and sceptre.

Diameter: 16.5mm. Weight: 1.40g. DA=12:6.

This mintmark for Trier does not appear in RIC for the CONSTANTINOPOLIS reverse type, although is listed for GLORIA EXERCITVS issues that appear after April AD 340 (RIC VIII, p. 144, nos. 101A-104). This might suggest two possibilities. Perhaps this coin is irregular, hence the unusual mint mark. Alternatively, there is no reason why the CONSTANTINOPOLIS type could not have been struck with this mintmark and continued to be issued after April AD 340 alongside the GLORIA EXERCITVS coins noted above. It is quite plausible that the current example therefore demonstrates the continued issue of this type after April AD 340 (pers.comm. Dr Andrew Brown, 6/11/2017).
