An incomplete copper alloy possible Roman furniture or box fitting or finial/mount (c. AD 43-410).
Description: The object has a rounded top, with a circular cross-section. From the rounded top the object tapers in and out again to form a 'waist' which is 5.8mm in diameter at its narrowest point. There is a step which is defined by a circular groove between the 'waist' and the foot of the fitting which is a flat, circular base. At the underside of the base there is the remains of an iron shank to affix the mount to the piece of furniture is evident.
Measurements: 18.5mm in length, 13.7mm in width and diameter, and weighs 10.48g.
Discussion: Similar mounts but bell-shaped, were found in excavations in an early 4th to mid 5th century grave fill in Colchester (see Crummy 1983: 168/fig. 204, no. 4656). Parallels on the PAS database include LIN-4534F1, ESS-D51A71 and LIN-5B92F4, LEIC-9F0007, LEIC-4A17B7, SUR-0049DB, BUC-FB11CC, BH-5A1672, BERK-2EC08C, BERK-2ED10A.
