An incomplete cast and engraved flat lead mediaeval personal seal matrix, dating c.1200-1350.
Description: The seal matrix is pointed oval in shape and is missing its suspension loop which would have been at its apex. The front undecorated leaving the central panel for a design blank perhaps implying an unfinished matrix. It has been engraved with an inscription which remains very clear and reads + SIGILLVM' PETRI (seal of Peter). The lead is heavily patinated off white colour.
Measurements: 44.88mm long, 28.74mm wide, 3.29mm thick and 20.65g in weight.
Discussion: This matrix fits with a group of commonly reported simple lead personal seal matrices dating to the 13th - mid 14th (Harvey and McGuinness 1996. 79-80).
