A fragment of a copper-alloy rowel spur. The sides are D-shaped in profile and both broken close to the centre point with the terminals missing. The neck of the spur is very short and round in profile with a circumferential collar at the base. The rowel box is missing. Rowel spurs with short necks appear in the 13th - 14th centuries. Later spurs appear to develop longer shafts around the 15th to 16th centuries (Clark, Museum of London, The Medieval Horse and its Equipment). The overall length is 22.43mm: The width between the sides is 34.93mm: The sides are 3mm thick: Weight is 3.59g.
