An incomplete medieval/ post-medieval copper alloy double oval buckle frame, missing its pin and dating broadly to 1250-1600. The loops are oval in shape and D-shaped in cross-section (being flat to the reverse). Both outside edges are decorated with three equidistant transverse grooves. The bar has bevelled edges and is square in cross-section, with a small projection at either end beyond the frame. There are traces of iron corrosion at its centre, suggesting the missing pin would have been made of iron.
The buckle has a green patina and a few reddish-brown patches. It measures 19.6mm in length, 13.2mm in width, 2.3mm in thickness and weighs 1.23g.
Similar buckle frames are illustrated by Egan 1991, pg. 88, nos. 380 and 381, dated to 1270-1350; however as the form persists a later date cannot be ruled out. The small size of the frame suggests it may have been a shoe buckle.
