Object type certainty: Certain

A probable copper-alloy mount in the form of a head, oval in shape measuring 31mm in length and 25mm in width. The metal of this mount is reddish brown in colour with patches of a black patination.

The front face is rounded, projecting and moulded to depict a bowl-like hair style with individual waves of hairs highlighted with grooves. The face is oval in shape with a small flat forehead and protruding eyebrows. The eyes are oval in shape and the nose bulbous. Below the nose there is a horizontal moulded mouth, the cheeks are chubby and the face has a double chin. It appears to be a somewhat cherubic male face.

The reverse of this mount is hollow and projecting from one terminal, behind the chin on the front face, there is a cylindrical shaped projection which is presumably the attachment device for this mount, it is not clear how this could have worked and it is likely to be incomplete due to old breaks but due to the metal patination it is difficult to tell.

No parallel could be found for this probable mount, however, due to the reddish colour of the metal it is perhaps most likely to be post medieval in date. What this mount would have been originally attached to is also unclear, it could have been a box or strap mount of some kind.
