A complete and well preserved rectangular gilded silver single sharp-hooked clasp dating to the 16th century, measuring 33.87mm in length and weighing 3.8g.

The body of the clasp is cast silver and decorated with gilded sheeting and wire. It has a four piece, trapezoidal sectioned body, 14.81mm wide, with a front plate comprising three longitudinal rectangular panels. Each panel is edged with wire and decorated with a row of four raised pellets of 2.6mm diameter, each set within a wire annulet. Between these are a number of much smaller pellets of 1.5mm diameter. The hook of the fastener is soldered to the body with a cast silver fleur-de-lis collar.

The back plate has a stamped letter P, possibly a maker's mark and an oblong aperture for fixing a strap or cord. There is an outer border of five semi-circular projections to each long side of the plate. Some damage and distortion to the rear of the item as well as loss to one of the borders is evident.

Such hooks were worn during the post medieval period in order to secure items of clothing. This example corresponds to Read's (2008) typology as part of the early post-medieval Class C, specifically Type 4, number 173.
