Probably a Late Roman to early Medieval cast copper alloy dolphin buckle of Hawkes and Dunning type 1A dating 300 to 450 AD. The frame is 'D' shaped, formed of two dolphin heads facing each other with a curved, scalloped projection between their snouts acting as a pin rest. The dolphin bodies curve around forming the rest of the frame, before terminating in a semi-circular knop with the strap bar between. The pin (tongue) is missing. The reverse of the buckle is flat and undecorated. The bar is rounded and may have been attached to a buckle plate. It has a dark green patina.
The length is 41mm, the width is 25mm and the weight 7.99g. Shares some similarities with BH-F30E52, SF-1A45D2 and ESS-E52552.
