Curatorial Report by Eleanor Ghey

7 silver denarii to AD 2017 T919 PAS ID: SWYOR-4A3012

Circumstances of discovery:

Found by seven finders [names redacted] on a Yorkshire Searchers Club outing on 10th August 2017. The coins were found on cultivated land and were scattered along about 30 meters of a hedgerow. The coins were submitted individually, the first being received at the British Museum on 27th November 2017 and the remainder submitted by the rally organiser, Stuart Littlewood, on 22nd Jan 2018. An eighth coin initially reported to the FLO was found to be a fourth century Roman base metal coin ('nummus') and was not brought to the Museum as it is considered to be a later stray find.

The coins:

The seven silver coins are all Roman Imperial denarii and range in date from AD 75 to c. AD 194. The group can reasonably be expected to have circulated together before deposition at the end of the second century AD or later.

Summary:

Vespasian (AD 69-79) 1

Trajan (AD 98-117) 3

Hadrian (AD 117-138) 2

Septimius Severus (AD 193-211) 1

Total 7

Disposition:

Tbc

Recommendation:

As a group of seven precious metal coins of the same find and over 300 years old, these coins are to be considered Treasure under the Treasure Act 1996.
