Cast lead spindle whorl, circular in plan and sub-rectangular in profile and section, with a neat circular hole that is 8.4 mm in diameter. Both surfaces are pitted with circular indentations that average about 1 mm in diameter. These are seen locally on ceramic spindle whorls but lead whorls are not normally decorated in Cornwall, but this find is from Dorset and was found with other Roman artefacts. Experimental work with spindle whorls show that flat and symmetrical examples like this work best for spinning and holding the wool.
Bishop (1996) illustrates a flat and pitted lead spindle whorl that is identical in size, from Roman Aldborough, on page 31, fig.17, no.172.
