A near complete cast and engraved flat lead medieaval seal matrix, dating c.1200-1350.

Description: The seal matrix is flat and circular in shape although slightly warped and chipped around the circumference. A flat hemispherical lug is placed at the top of the reverse creating a suspension loop although it is significantly warped and folded over itself. The front is decorated by an inscribed sexafoil device surrounded by a legend. The legend is heavily worn and the initial mark is a simple, what is visible appears to read "+S'[_____].ROGG'. The S suggests a personal seal but and the second is likely to be a surname or patrionymic references, possibly to a father. In all likelihood the second name represented here is Roger. The Matrix is heavily patinated an off white

Measurements: 20.52mm in diameter, 5.86mm thick (including suspension lug, 2.46mm without)) and 6.6g in weight

Discussion: This matrix fits a group of well attested relatively simple personal lead seals dating to the 13th - mid 14th century as outlined by Harvey and McGuinness (1996. 79-80).

Inscription: S'[_____].ROGG
