A small incomplete heavily worn and corroded sheet copper-alloy medieval harness pendant and suspension mount, c.12th -14th centuries AD.

Description: The suspension mount is formed from a square maine panel with two equally opposing wings at the bottom edged, likely a broken suspension loop. The front is flat but decorated, in relief with two concentric circles overlain with a bisectting cross to each edge of the outer circle, there is a diagonal line from outer to inner circle in each quarter. The front face has a raised plain border around the outside edge. The back is undecorrated but has an integral shank. The object is patinated light green.

Dimensions: Length 21.54mm, width 13.95mm, thickness 2.07mm and weight 3.01g.

Discussion: Although most common in the 14th century harness pendants of relatively simple form are known to have occurred from the 12th century. The heavily worn nature of this example makes dating problematic. The relatively small size however may indicate this pendant and suspension mount relates to the small 14th century fringing pendants used in conjunction with small bells on reins (Griffiths 1986, 2)
