A complete copper alloy late Roman to early medieval propeller-shaped mount. It has a central roundel with two opposing triangular projections. The outer face is rounded with faceted edges and the reverse is flattened. There is a raised longitudinal ridge running across the centre of the outer face. There is a small circular hole through the centre of each triangular section, both of which are filled with the corroded remains of iron rivets. There is traces of a white metal coating on both surfaces.
Propeller mounts are usually associated with the late Roman military, but they continue to be used into the early fifth century with larger examples tending to be later correlating with an increase in belt size (Bishop and Coulston 1993, 173-4, 3 and 5). See also Appels & Laycock (fig SL. 14.11) and for later examples MacGregor and Bolick (1993, 212; ref. 36.9).
