Roman brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth 2011, Part 3, Group 5a4, flat wing ends type), c.f. Mackreth Type 4i, Plate 47-8, AD c. 75-400. The copper alloy brooch has semi-cylindrical undecorated wings with incomplete perforated wing caps. The axis bar, spring and pin are missing. At the centre of the upper edge of the wings there are traces of an integral, perforated lug or hook. The bowhead is slightly hump-like and has two vertical ridges with fine ribbing. Either side of the bowhead there is a slight plain platform around the wings. Beyond this platform there is a pointed high-relief lentoid as decoration. The bow is oval in section and tapers to a blunt broken terminal just below the wings.

The surface of the brooch has an incomplete well-developed green patina.

It measures 16.67mm in length, 17.51mm in width, and weighs 3.51g.

The brooch is a Polden Hill type, Bayley and Butcher (2004:160) comment that the distribution of Polden Hill brooches are concentrated in the West Midlands. Mackreth classifies this type as probably Group 4i dating to 2nd to 4thcentury.
