Unique ID: DOR-B3E3D7

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Flake 1: A small sub-oval secondary flake of Portland chert classed as debitage, produced during the process of lithic reduction. The chert is opaque and lightly mottled mid to dark grey in colour with a low-gloss patina. The dorsal face shows two broad flake removal scars. The ventral face shows a low bulb of percussion indicating probable use of a soft hammer. The distal end terminates with a hinge fracture.

Dimensions: 46.3mm x 37.8mm x 10.2 mm.

Weight: 17.6g.

Date: Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age - 3300 to 1600 BC

Flake 2: A small sub-oval secondary flake of Portland chert classed as debitage, produced during the process of lithic reduction. An area of nodular cortex remains on 25% of the dorsal face on the right side, proximal end. The chert is opaque and mid to dark grey in colour with a mid-gloss patina. Some modern damage to edges has exposed a darker chert which has a more consistant colour indicating the the lighter coating which now covers the flake is a thin layer of re-cortification.The dorsal face shows two parallel blade removal flake scars, the curved ventral face shows a low bulb of percussion indicating probable use of a soft hammer.

Dimensions: 48.4mm x 29.3mm x 9.2mm.

Weight: 12.8g.

Date: Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age - 3300 to 1600 BC

Flake 3: A sub-oval secondary flake of Portland chert classed as debitage, produced during the process of lithic reduction. Thin chalky cortex remains along the left side margin of the dorsal face. The chert is opaque and lightly mottled mid to light grey in colour with a low-gloss patina. The dorsal face shows stepped flaking with hinge fractures eminating from the right side margin. The ventral face shows a fairly prominent bulb of percussion and bulbar scar indicating probable use of a hard hammer. Reddish brown ferrous stains mainly to flake scar ridges are also visible across the dorsal face.

Dimensions: 39.7mm x 30.8mm x 13.9mm.

Weight: 20.8g.

Date: Late Neolithic to early Bronze Age 3300 to 1600 BC.

Flake 4: A sub-oval secondary flake of Portland chert classed as debitage, produced during the process of lithic reduction. Cortex remains across half of the dorsal face on the left side. The chert is opaque and mottled mid to dark grey in colour with a mid-gloss patina. The dorsal face shows flaking scars across the exposed right side, the ventral face shows a prominent bulb of percussion with bulbar scar and rippling and terminates at the distal end with a hinge fracture.

Dimensions: 39.5mm x 32.3mm x 12mm.

Weight: 16.4g.

Date: Late Neolithic to early Bronze Age - 3300 to 1600 BC.

Flake 5: A sub-oval secondary flake of Portland chert classed as debitage, produced during the process of lithic reduction. A very small amount of cortex remains on the left proximal end margin of the dorsal face. The chert is opaque and mottled light to mid grey in colour with a low-gloss patina and is now covered in a thin layer of mottled re-cortification. The dorsal face shows parallel blade removal scars with a hinge fracture at the proximal end. The ventral face shows a prominent bulb of percussion indicating probable use of a hard hammmer.

Dimensions: 43.7mm x 21.7mm x 7.4mm.

Weight: 5.2g.

Date: Late Neolithic to early Bronze Age - 3300 to 1600 BC.

Flake 6: A small sub-rectangular secondary flake of Portland chert classed as debitage, produced during the process of lithic reduction. A small amount of thin, chalky cortex remains on the distal end of the dorsal face. The flake has a triangular cross section. The chert is opaque and mottled mid to dark grey in colour with a mid gloss patina, small areas of modern damage reveal a more consistant dark grey coloured chert indicating that most of the surface of the flake is now covered in a thin mottled layer of re-cortification which is more prominent on the ventral face. The dorsal face shows parallel blade removal scars. The ventral face shows a fairly prominent bulb of percussion indicating probable use of a hard hammer.

Dimensions: 39.1mm x 17.6mm x 6.3mm.

Weight: 4.2g.

Date: Late Neolithic to early Bronze Age - 3300 to 1600 BC.

Flake 7: An irregular shaped secondary flake of Portland chert classed as debitage, produced during the process of lithic reduction. A small amount of nodular cortex remains on the left side of the dorsal face. The chert is opaque and mottled mid to dark grey in colour with a mid gloss patina. Small areas of possible scaled retouch along the right margin of the dorsal face reveal a more consistant dark grey coloured chert indicating that most of the surface of the flake is now covered in a thin mottled layer of re-cortification. The dorsal face shows two flake removal scars, the ventral face shows a prominent bulb of percussion indicating probable use of a hard hammer.

Dimensions: 37.9mm x 29.8mm x 7.3mm.

Weight: 6.9g.

Date: Late Neolithic to early Bronze Age - 3300 to 1600 BC.

Flake 8: A small sub-rectangular secondary flake of Portland chert classed as debitage, produced during the process of lithic reduction. Cortex remains on areas of the distal end. The chert is opaque with a low-gloss patina and a smooth light grey to white mottled layer of re-cortification. The dorsal face is concave, the ventral face shows a fairly prominent bulb of percussion indicating probable use of a hard hammer.

Dimensions: 17.3mm x 31.2mm x 4.5mm.

Weight: 2.5g.

Date: Late Neolithic to early Bronze Age - 3300 to 1600 BC.

Flake 9: A small sub-oval secondary flake of Portland chert classed as debitage, produced during the process of lithic reduction. A small amount of cortex remains on the distal end of both faces. The chert is opaque and mottled mid grey in colour with a layer of mottled milky white re-cortification and a low gloss patina. The dorsal face shows flaking scars, the ventral face shows a fairly prominent bulb of percussion indicating probable use of a hard hammer.

Dimensions: 22.9mm x 18.2mm x 5.8mm.

Weight: 2.2g.

Date: Late Neolithic to early Bronze Age - 3300 to 1600 BC.

Flake 10: A small oval secondary flake of Portland chert classed as debitage, produced during the process of lithic reduction. A very small amount of cortex remains on the right side margin of the dorsal face close to the proximal end. The chert is opaque and mottled mid to dark grey in colour with a low-gloss patina, now covered in a thin speckled off-white layer of re-cortifiction. The dorsal face shows two small flaking scars, the ventral face shows a fairly prominent bulb of percussion.

Dimensions: 17.3mm x 20.9mm x 4.1mm.

Weight: 1.3g.

Date: Late Neolithic to early Bronze Age - 3300 to 1600 BC.

Flake 11: A small sub-oval secondary flake of Portland chert classed as debitage, produced during the process of lithic reduction. Thick nodular cortex remains on the distal end. The chert is opaque and mottled mid to dark grey in colour with a low gloss patina, some modern damage has exposed a darker chert which has a more consistant colour indicating the the mottled effect which now covers the flake is a thin layer of re-cortifiction. The dorsal face shows flake removal scars, the ventral face shows a fairly prominent bulb of percussion which has formed a bulbed ridge towards the distal end, this can be due to the strength of the impact combined with the structure of the chert.

Dimensions: 22mm x 22.1 x 7.8mm

Weight: 3.5g.

Date: Late Neolithic to early Bronze Age - 3300 to 1600 BC.
