UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT

Unique ID: LVPL-7556E5

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A lead alloy possible weight or spindle whorl of uncertain date. The object is circular in plan and D-shaped in cross-section. The lower face of the object is undecorated, flat and has a dark waxy grey patina. The upper face of the object has a rough dark brown iron patina which is decorated with raised pellets. In the centre of the object there is a circular very slight depression measuring 10mm in diameter. This depression is mid-grey in colour.

Dimensions: 29mm in diameter, 6mm thick, 25.7g

The shape of the object, decoration and central depression is suggestive of this being an unfinished spindle whorl. However the combination of iron and lead to create a spindle whorl is unusual. As such the exact function of this object is unknown. The condition of the object and patina suggest that a post-medieval date is likely.
