A cast copper-alloy incomplete hollow object of uncertain date and function.
Description: The object in plan has a large curved bottom edge concave sides and a narrow opposite edge. There is raised ridge just back from the edge. The reverse is the same except it has no ridge and extends slightly further than the front. The sides are flat but have the raised ridge from the front continues across them to the back, both sides are slightly concave, one more than the other. The more concave sides splays further than the other leaving it asymmetric. The top edges terminates in a historical break. The inside of the object is hollow creating a box affect and was clearly intended to be filled. The object is heavily patinated.
Measurements: 30.88mm long.41.52mm wide, 16.05mm thick and 31.15g in weight.
Discussion: The date and identity of this object is uncertain. In some ways it resembles the pommel or pommel element of a sword but no clear comparisons can be found. A wide date is given below covering the most likely origins. It is hoped further research can tie down this objects i.d.
