AD 800 - 1100). The whetstone is formed from a very fine-grained, sedimentary, mica-rich stone. It is sub-rectangular in plan with slightly tapering sides, and is sub-rectangular in cross section. A suspension hole has been drilled in the upper part of the whetstone by drilling from both sides to produce an hourglass-shaped hole, 4.9mm in diameter. The opposite end is broken, probably in antiquity. The stone is similar to other mica schist whetstones found at the same location but is of a finer structure, maybe chosen for a smaller whetstone such as this. Similar examples to this whetstone have been recorded by the PAS and can also been seen in Saunders, Salisbury Museum Catalogue (volume 1) and suggests that it was imported from Norway in the early-medieval period.
It is 54.1mm in length, 13.82mm maximum width, is 7.32mm maximum thickness and weighs 10.67 grams..2017-09-29 20:19:092017-10-06 16:27:33411Certain114747PAS59CE9CAD001E822828PUBLICStone11794Hand madeIncompleteGoodEARLY MEDIEVALEMx41022p0gjgrshhcwEARLY MEDIEVALEMx41022p0gjgrshhcwChance find during metal detectingCircaCirca86744159425234531741423Restricted AccessTF4392TF49SWSkidbrooke1016316382017_0929_121746AA.jpg1101038Early-medieval whetstoneAll rights reserved4images/tomredmayne/East MidlandsOperations to a depth less than 0.25 mCultivated landEuropean RegionCountyLincolnshireDistrictEast LindseyCivil Parish53.42350.191137Restricted AccessReturned to finder96475
