A fragment of a Roman Black Burnished ware ceramic vessel (c. AD 43-c. 410).
This ?BB1 rim sherd from ?Wareham/Poole Harbour, Dorset is relatively hard fired. The rim is simple and rounded. The surfaces and core are greyish black. It is tempered with fine pieces of rounded sand and occasional pieces of sub-rounded unidentified stone which are up to c. 2.9mm in length. Tiny flecks of mica are present.
The undecorated surfaces have been burnished. All breaks appear to be recent.
Height: 34.6mm; width: 43.4mm; thickness: 7.9mm. Weight: 15.33g.
It is estimated that when complete, the outer diameter would have been about 160-180mm.
