A complete copper-alloy penannular brooch of Roman date, c. AD50 - 200. The brooch is of Booth Type A8 (Fowler Type A3) with a plain, circular sectioned frame which expands slightly towards the terminals. The terminals are rounded knops with a single raised moulded collar. A sub-circular sectioned pin with arched median portion remains looped around the frame.

The metal has a shiny brown patina and is in fair condition. The brooch is 30.8mm long, 5.2mm in diameter at the terminals and 3.1mm diameter at the frame. The pin is 38.8mm long, 3.8mm wide, 2.2mm thick. The brooch weighs 6.7g.

Dr Anna Booth (2014, p.129) discusses the distribution of Type A brooches as focusing on Roman military sites followed by towns. Fewer than 50 have also been found at hillforts and Roman villas. Of those from hillforts the majority of dated examples come from Roman contexts. Dr Booth (2014, p.137) also states that humped pins are concentrated in the north of Britain.
