A cast lead alloy object, possibly a fragment from a pilgrim badge of medieval date AD c. 1300 - 1400.
The object is in the form of a shield with three orbs or balls along the top edge, and bearing a cross. The rear face has a verticle slot and the remains of some form of catchplate, as if it were intended to be afixed to a pin or wire.
The object may be a fragment of a larger, more complex design. For example, Spencer (Pilgrim Souvenirs and Secular Badges 1998, p.80) illustrates badges depicting Becket's return from excile in which soldiers in the ship bear similar shields.
