Gold aureus of Antoninus Pius (AD 138-61), dating to AD 140-3 (Reece Period 7), TRIB POT COS III, Mars and Rhea Silvia. Mint of Rome. RIC III, p. 37, no. 99(b); BMC IV, p. 39, no. 253. This is a rare coin, the British Museum having one specimen. 17mm; 5.8g. The coin shares obverse dies with BMC IV no. 239 and reverse dies with BMC IV no. 253. It is Calico, The Roman Aurei (2003), vol 1, p. 318, no. 1686 (same dies). The weight of the coin is slightly low - this could be partly to do with wear, but it is also interesting to note that the edge of the coin is closer to the legends than is normal for these pieces. It is possible that some gold has been taken from the edge. Actual inspection of the coin would be needed to determine this.
