Early medieval copper-alloy blundered Northumbrian styca, dating to c. 830 - 870 AD. Both sides of the coin bear inscriptions but the letters vary in orientation and all are reversed. There is a blundered king's name on the obverse of the coin, around a central cross. This has been transliterated as: + R E D/R E I D/R E . R E X and is probably a blundering of EDILRED; in which case, the date range could be restricted further to c. 830 - 849 AD. Many of the letters are only half visible and have been truncated when the coin was struck. On the reverse of the coin, the inscription is nonsensical: + ? ? A/V E V/A Æ V E (underlined letters denote that they are not reversed). Some of the letters are too corroded to be discernible but most are clear. The coin has a dark green-brown patina and traces of beaded edges where they've not been cut off by the die stamp. The coin is 12.36mm in diameter and 1.20mm in thickness. The weight of the coin is 0.75g.
