Cast lead uniface trade weight, circular in plan and trapezoidal in section, with moulded decoration on the upper face comprising a flat-topped shield bearing two chevrons, one above the other, composed of two sets of oblique lines. The reverse is plain. The outer edge of the reverse is bevelled so that the diameter on the reverse of the object is greater than the front face. The weight weighs 3.48 g which equates to an eighth of an ounce avoirdupois. Heraldic shields are used on lead weights, often in the shape of a shield, but they are often much larger. Shield motifs are used on copper alloy coin weights, but these reference the type of coin that they are to be weighed against in some way.
See WREX-FB93D1 and NMGW-C351F6 for lead uniface weights with a quartered shield of similar size, which are dated from the late Medieval to the early Post-Medieval period.
See SF-CA5655 for a larger circular lead trade weight with a shield decorated with two chevrons, which is dated from the Post-medieval period.
