Irish Themed Clay pipe with three leaf clover and harp with Maid of Erin, stem broken, probably dates from ca. 19th - early 20th century.
The bowl and part of the stem from a clay tobacco pipe that is decorated with a hatched shamrock leaf on the left hand side of the bowl and an Irish harp on the right. These symbols were often paired on pipes and reflect the rise of patriotic motifs during the nineteenth century. Pipes such as this would have been popular amongst the large numbers of Irish migrants who had come to England seeking work. The pipe itself would have been a spurless short-stemmed or 'cutty' pattern, most likely with a nipple mouthpiece. Designs like this were produced by many of the larger manufacturers between about 1860 and 1920, with a few examples being produced even later. It will not be possible to say which firm this particular example came from until either kiln waste or a more detailed distribution plot of examples has been recovered.
