An Early Anglo-Saxon iron spear, dating circa 550-650. The spear has a flat tapering blade with an incomplete conical shaft. The shaft is not fully rounded. The blade is of maximum width close to the socket.
The spear measures 298mm in length. The blade measures 242mm in length and 38mm in width at the widest point. The socket measures 12mm in diameter at the break.
An attempt was made to classify and date this weapon using the system defined in Bayliss and Hines (2013, 163-170) which uses ratios between spearhead's various elements. These allowed the spearhead the spearhead to be tentatively placed in Type SP3-a (parallel-sided spearhead), which appears to date to the second half of the sixth century (Bayliss and Hines 2013, 336).
